The RYA Dinghy Instructor is an experienced sailor able to sail in strong winds. The Dinghy Instructors’ Course will be introduced to the RYA teaching methods developed over many years that have become standardised to allow the same ‘method’ in every training centre. The course includes teaching techniques both ashore and afloat for both adults and children, the preparation and presentation of lessons, the use of visual aids, the assessment of student abilities, the use of a powered craft in a taching environment, Safeguarding and child protection, Health and Safety and cold water shock.
Students will be assessed on a continual basis throughout the course and during the final Moderation Day which will include a practical teaching session afloat and ashore, land drills and a 5 minute presentation (optional).
On successful completion of the course, the DI can deliver the National Sailing Scheme Levels 1, 2, 3, Seamanship Skills, Day Sailing, Sailing with Spinnakers (where appropriately experienced and approved by the centre Principal) and Youth Sailing Schemes Stages 1 – 4.
Sailing ability to at least the standard of the Pre-Entry Assessment.
- 16+ years of age
- RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate
- Valid First Aid Certificate
- Pre-Entry Sailing Assessment completed within one year prior to the instructor training course.
- RYA Safe and Fun Safeguarding Certificate
- RYA Membership
