Seamanship Skills

About The Course

Seamanship can be described as the ‘easy way’ to complete a manoeuvre.  Tuition will be given by trained instructors using appropriate supervision ratios.  Much of the work afloat will be done without the instructor aboard.  The emphasis is on increasing the self-reliance and decision making of the sailor.

The manoeuvres during the course will easy steps, including:

  • Planning/Preparation
  • Apporach/Communication
  • Execution/Escape

Subjects covered during the course include:

  • Leaving /Returning to shore (windward and leeward)
  • Picking up moorings
  • Coming Alongside
  • Anchoring
  • Reefing
  • Ropework
  • Man Overboard
  • Sailing in adverse conditions (Rudderless and Centreboardless)
  • Inversion Capsizes

Assumed Knowledge

It is assumed that when starting on this course you have already mastered the practical skills and absorbed the background knowledge required for the previous levels in either the RYA National Sailing Scheme or the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme.

Duration

Approximaely 16 hours (either spread over a series of sessions or 2 full days)

On successful completion of this course, you will be capable of manoeuvring a dinghy/keel boat/multihull in a seamanlike manner and making seamanship decisions in moderate conditions

Next Steps

It is recommended that all participants consolidate this Seamanship course with some practice at our open sessions and clubs then take any of the other RYA Sailing Scheme Advanced Module courses.

PPSA Pirates

Our regular ‘club’ nights/afternoons.  For those who have completed their first sailing course and want to continue.  We run our Pirates sessions on weekday evenings during the spring/summer months, normally a Monday and/or Tuesday depending on skill level and type of boat sailed.

If you want to develop the confidence and enjoyment of sailing  in the skills you’ve learnt previously before moving onto the next level.  Both chilren and adults are able to attend.

Individual Requirements

If you can’t find the sort of course you want in any of the other products, why not get in touch to design your own course, built to your own requirements?  Do you want to practice mark roundings or starts, do you just want to concentrate on trapezing or crewing or anything else to help you move up the fleet?  Half days, full days or longer can be catered for, just let us know.

Club Racing

There are ample opportunities to participate in local racing, either at PPSA who will put together racing and race training as required by groups of sailors, or by participating in some of the numerous club races and regattas that take place every year.

For the kids there are the RYA Cymru Wales Club Youth Racing Circuit (CYRC) events that take place throught the SW Wales Region.

If you get hooked on racing, you can even get onto the numerous National events and circuit races that take place throuought the country and beyond.

Instructor Training

Now that you’ve learnt to sail, you may wish to pass on those skills to others – a great thing to do.

PPSA offers the complete range of instructor courses, from the Assistant Instructor Course, through the Dinghy Instructor and then onto Senior Instructor, Advanced Instructor and more.

These great skills can be used as a volunteer at the club level or as a leg up into the waterbased training industry.  Again, if you want more details, please get in touch with the PPSA Office.

Shorebased Knowledge

Essential Navigation and Seamanship at Pembrokeshire Performance Sailing Academy.

Do you want to increase your background knowledge before moving onto your next practical course?  PPSA can deliver a range of theory based courses that will improve your understanding and application for your progression.

Some of the subjects include First Aid, Navigation, Marine VHF Radio, Sea Survival and for the commercial users, the Professional Practices and Responsibilities Course.  More details can be found on our Shorbased Courses page.

Powerboat Courses

If you’re a member of a sailing club elsewhere or if you’d like to get a powerboat qualification, PPSA can deliver entry level and courses useful at the club level.

Accommodation

Please call the centre should you require any accommodation during your course

PPSA is located within the Llanion Cove Complex that has close to 80 bedspaces.

The accommodation is largly self-catering although there is a cafe and bar on site and is bunk house in style.  We can can arrange accommodation at Llanion Cove whilst you are on your course or underaking on water experiences for a small additional charge.

The Cove is located close to Pembroke Dock, adjacent to the Cleddau Estuary and is an ideal location from which to explore the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park, particularly in the Year of the Sea #FindYourEpic.

The Cleddau Estuary and local area boasts a vast array of visitor and historical attractions, from Pembroke Castle, the home of Henry VII to the nature reserves around the county.

PPSA is located right in the middle of this great county and it’s historic and beautiful countryside.  Please get in touch with the centre for more information and to check availability
