About The Course

The Advanced Instructor must have the background knoweldge, technical ability and skill to demonstrate any of the Sailing with Spinnakers or Performance Sailing techniques.  Teaching people how to sail performance boats requires a subtle change in the attitude of the instructor.  There are many different skills to learn from a coaching point of view.  New sailing dinghies have significantly different characteristics to older designed boats.  Instructors have to be able to analyse performance give positive feedback and coach progressively.  Advanced Instructors must be confident in the sailing boats in which they are coaching in order that they can give effective demonstrations.

The course will have the following content:

  • Performance Boat Handling, including spinnaker handling
  • 5 Essentials, effective coaching
  • Effective Powerboat Handling in a coaching environment

Assumed Knowledge

Candidates will hold the RYA Instructor Certificate

Have at least one seasons instructing experience

Possess the skills to at least the Performance Sailing and Sailing with Spinnakers modules.

Will have powerboat handling skills in a teaching environment.


The course is a two day continuous assessment period

On Completion

Able to deliver the Performance Sailing and Sailing with Spinnakers modules.

PPSA is located within the Llanion Cove Complex that has close to 80 bedspaces.

The accommodation is largly self-catering although there is a cafe and bar on site and is bunk house in style.  We can can arrange accommodation at Llanion Cove whilst you are on your course or underaking on water experiences for a small additional charge.

The Cove is located close to Pembroke Dock, adjacent to the Cleddau Estuary and is an ideal location from which to explore the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park, particularly in the Year of the Sea #FindYourEpic.

The Cleddau Estuary and local area boasts a vast array of visitor and historical attractions, from Pembroke Castle, the home of Henry VII to the nature reserves around the county.

PPSA is located right in the middle of this great county and it’s historic and beautiful countryside.  Please get in touch with the centre for more information and to check availability
