Direct Assessment
For those individuals who are experienced Powerboat Drivers, PPSA is able to offer Direct Assesments for the Powerboat Level 2 (Powerboat Helm) certificate.
Candidates should have the equivalent of at lease one full season’s powerboat handling experience and will be expected to carry out the following practical manoeuvres in a safe manner:
- Securing to a buoy
- Holding off
- Turning in own boat length
- Mooring alongside up/down tide
- Turning using warps
- Conduct MOB Procedures
- Start/Stop engines
- Planing speed runs including S and U turns.
Additionally, candidates will be expected to answer correctly theory questions that may include but not limited to:
- Hull forms and sea keeping
- Seating
- Engines/drives
- Fuel/Electrical systems/Fire procedures/Maintenance
- Use and limitations of chart plotter and digitial navigation
- Sources of weather information
- Collision Regulations and local bylaws
- Awareness of other water users
- Communications
- Emergency Actions/Distress situations
- Charts/symbols/tides/buoyage
