About The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course
The aim of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is to teach powerboat handling and seamanship in powerboats. The course may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement and the certificates issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place. Practical elements of the course will include:
- Launching and Recovery
- Preparation of boat and crew.
- Boat handling
- Picking up a mooring.
- Leaving and coming alongside
- Anchoring
- Man Overboard
- Coastal Application
There are also theory elements to the course.
Assumed Knowledge
No prior knowledge is required.
Min age is 12 years old.
Those aged 12 – 15 years will have their certificates endorsed – “is aged 12 – 15 years and therefore the holder should only use powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult”.
Duration
The course is delivered by our experienced RYA Powerboat Instructors over 2 full days (16 hours). It can also be spread over a number of equivalent hours.

On Completion
On completion of the course, you will have the skills and background knowledge needed by a competent powerboat driver. It is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

On successful completion of your Course, your name, contact details date of birth, certificate number and date of issue will be shared with the RYA through a secure web portal on www.rya.org.uk. The data will be stored on the RYA’s central database. This information allows the RYA to record your qualification, to update any records they may hold for you, and to verify or replace your certificate if required. After attaining the Powerboat Level 2 qualification you’ll need to gain some experience before taking on the RYA Intermediate Powerboat Course at PPSA.
