Changes to Marine VHF/DSC Short Range Certificate Courses

From the beginning of January 2014, the delivery and assessment of the VHF/DSC SRC course will change due to updated guidance and direction from the MCA.  As a result, the course must be assessed by a differnt individual to that who delivered the instruciton, this will involve both a written and practical ‘assessment’ each of which will last a minimum of 30 minutes (total therefore 1 hour). The test will cost £60 across all training centres, this does not include the cost of any pre-training/instruction.

In addition, the instructional course must be run over a 10 hour period.  For class room based courses, this will involve a minimum of 7 hours in the classroom, the other 3 hours can be made up of guided preparatory work at home, using a pack that will be sent to you by the Training Centre.

The good news is that from the beginning of 2014, the course is also going interactive, meaning that you will be able to do all the pre-study at home, using your PC/MAC/IPad.  You will then have to go to an RTC to undertake the Assessment therefore only 1 hour plus a little admin time in the classroom.  Prices for the interactive course or classroom based training will be set by individual training centres.

As you can see, the cost currently advertised by PPSA (total £90, including the licence fee) will be going up, this is unfortunate.  The exact pricing that PPSA will deliver the course for has yet to be defined.  You will be pleased to hear that PPSA will be delivering the course interactively – watch this space!  Please get back to me with any questions.VHF_DSC
