About The Course
Small boat cruising is a fascinating and relaxing pastime, whether your horizon is the far end of the resevoir or further afield. Curising is as diverse in nature as the boats that are used. Sail Cruising is a very safe activity, providing you follow a few simple pinciples and plan your day to make the best use of the sailing area and conditions.
The course will cover the following subjects
- Equipment for Safety and Pilotage
- Boat choice, setup and equipment stowage
- Meteorology
- Passage Planning
- Pilotage in Practice
- Buoyage
- Decision Making During a Passage
Tuition will be given by trained instructors, supervised by a Coastal Senior Instructor. The course will include the plannign and exectution of a day sail.
Assumed Knowledge
On starting this course you should have already mastered the practical skills and absorbed the background knowledge required for the previous levels in either the RYA National Sailing Scheme or the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme. In addition, sailors wishing to cruise independently should ensure that they understand and can carry out the manoeuvres in the Seamanship Skills Course of the National Sailing Scheme
Duration
Approximaely 16 hours (either spread over a series of sessions or 2 full days)
On Completion
On successful completion of this course, you will have a confident, safe approach to planning and executing a short day sail in a dinghy/keelboat/multihull.

Next Steps
It is recommended that all participants consolidate this Day Sailing course with some practice at our open sessions and clubs then take any of the other RYA Sailing Scheme Advanced Module courses.
