About The Course
Seamanship can be described as the ‘easy way’ to complete a manoeuvre. Tuition will be given by trained instructors using appropriate supervision ratios. Much of the work afloat will be done without the instructor aboard. The emphasis is on increasing the self-reliance and decision making of the sailor.
The manoeuvres during the course will easy steps, including:
- Planning/Preparation
- Apporach/Communication
- Execution/Escape
Subjects covered during the course include:
- Leaving /Returning to shore (windward and leeward)
- Picking up moorings
- Coming Alongside
- Anchoring
- Reefing
- Ropework
- Man Overboard
- Sailing in adverse conditions (Rudderless)
Assumed Knowledge
It is assumed that when starting on this course you have already mastered the practical skills and absorbed the background knowledge required for the previous levels in either the RYA National Sailing Scheme or the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme.
Duration
Approximaely 16 hours (either spread over a series of sessions or 2 full days)
On Completion
On successful completion of this course, you will be capable of manoeuvring a dinghy/keel boat/multihull in a seamanlike manner and making seamanship decisions in moderate conditions

Next Steps
It is recommended that all participants consolidate this Seamanship course with some practice at our open sessions and clubs then take any of the other RYA Sailing Scheme Advanced Module courses.
