About The Course
The RYA Powerboat Level 1 Course is a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. The issued certificate will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place. The minimum age for this course is 8 year old. Practical elements of the course will include:
- Launching and Recovery (8 to 11 year olds to observe this session only)
- Preparation of boat and crew.
- Boat handling
- Propeller angle/immersion, use of shallow drive.
- Slow speed handling, ahead and astern
- Steering, controls and windage
- Steer and control speed
- Start/stop engine
- Demonstrate the use of a killcoard at all times.
- Picking up a mooring.
- Leaving and coming alongside
There are also theory elements to the course.
Assumed Knowledge
No prior knowledge is required.
Min age is 8 years old
Those aged 8 – 11 will have their certificates endorsed – is aged 8 – 11 years and therefore should only used powered craft unde the supervision of a responsible adult on board the craft.
Those aged 12 – 15 years will have their certificates endorsed – is aged 12 – 15 years and therefore the holder should only use powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult.

On Completion
On completion of the RYA Powerboat Level 1 course, you will have undertaken and understand a practical introduction to powerboat handling skills.
Next Steps
On completion of your Powerboat level 1 course there are a few options depending on your age. If you are aged at least 12 years old then try our Powerboat Level 2 Course which will build on those Level 1 skills.
