Course Outline
The RYA Powerboat Instructor Course is a three day course assessed by an independent RYA Powerboat Trainer on the third day.
Candidates who are already qualified as an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor (power) may attend a one day conversion course instead. The course is preceded by a Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment to ensure that candidates have the powerboat driving skills required of an instructor. These skills are based on the RYA Powerboat Level 2 skills. Candidates considering enrolling for this course should ensure that they possess driving skills to the required standard.
Prior Experience
Five seasons experience of powerboating logged (preferably in range of boat types and sizes) or one season for those who use powerboats as an integral part of their normal full-time occupation.
Pre-requisites
- Hold the RYA National Powerboat Level 2
- Hold a valid first aid certificate
- Be a minimum of 16 years old. No candidates under this age will be accepted onto the training course
- Successfully have passed the RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment within a year of the training course.
- Candidates wishing to teach the RYA Safety Boat Course must firstly hold the award themselves.
- Current RYA Membership.
Although not mandatory, it is strongly recommended thta potential candidates attend and ‘shadow’ and RYA Powerboat Level 2 coure before committing to the Instructor Course. This will give an indication of what will be expected of candidates during the Instructor course.
Qualifed to teach
On completion, successful candidates will be able to teach up to and including Powerboat Level 2 under the supervision of the Principal or Chief Instructor. If you hold the Safety Boat Certificate, you may also teach the RYA Safety Boat Course.
Validity
Five years from date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained.
