Assessment Overview

In order to attend the RYA Powerboat Instructors’ Course, candidates must first have attended and successfully passed the Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment (PISA).   This will ensure that candidates have the powerboat driving skills required of an instructor.  These skills are based on the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course skills.  Candidates considering enrolling on an RYA Powerboat Instructors Course should ensure that they possess driving skills to the required standard.  The assessment will be conducted by an RYA Powerboat Trainer and is valid for 1 year from the date it is taken.

Requirements

Candidates for the pre-entry assessment will be expected to demonstrate competence in the following manoeuvres during the Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment:

  • Hold off a mark
  • Pick up and secure to a buoy
  • Moor alongside up/downtide
  • Turn using warps
  • Turn in a confined space
  • Recover a person in the water dummy
  • Stop/start engine
  • Planing speed runs including ‘Figure 8, U and S turns.

Experience

To attend the Powerboat Instructors Course, candidates require five seasons experience of powerboating logged (preferably in range of boat types and sizes) or one season for those who use powerboats as an integral part of their normal full-time occupation.
