Powerboat Instructors Course

About The Course

The powerboat instructor is an experienced Level 2 (or above) powerboater that has undertaken and successfully passed the instructor training course.  The course is conducted over 3 days and will contain a number of elements, including:

  • The theory of teaching
  • Delivery of practical subjects
  • Preparation and use of visual aids
  • Lesson planning/teaching styles.
  • Practical driving
  • Reviewing/feedback
  • RYA Standards and structure of the RYA Powerboat Scheme
  • Assessing student ability and developing skills

During the course, the candidate will receive input from the trainer and also form the other candidates.

The course will be moderated by an external moderator (an RYA Powerboat Trainer) who has not been associated with the course.

Assumed Knowledge

Candidates for the course must:

  • Hold the RYA National Powerboat Certificate Level 2.
  • Hold a valid first aid certificate (RYA approved).
  • Be an RYA Member
  • Possess at least 5 years’ experience of practical powerboating in a variety and types of boat.  For those who are powerboating full-time, this may be reduced to one season.
  • Be a minimum age of 16 years old.  No candidates under this age will be accepted onto a training course.
  • Before being accepted onto a training course, candidates must enrol onto and successfully pass the RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Asssessment.
  • Candidates wishing to be able to teach the RYA Safety Boat Course must firstly hold the award themselves.


3 full days.

On Completion

Successful candidates will be issued with an RYA Instructor certificate, which will be valid for five years if supported by an approved first aid certificate.

PPSA is located within the Llanion Cove Complex that has close to 80 bedspaces.

The accommodation is largly self-catering although there is a cafe and bar on site and is bunk house in style.  We can can arrange accommodation at Llanion Cove whilst you are on your course or underaking on water experiences for a small additional charge.

The Cove is located close to Pembroke Dock, adjacent to the Cleddau Estuary and is an ideal location from which to explore the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park, particularly in the Year of the Sea #FindYourEpic.

The Cleddau Estuary and local area boasts a vast array of visitor and historical attractions, from Pembroke Castle, the home of Henry VII to the nature reserves around the county.

PPSA is located right in the middle of this great county and it’s historic and beautiful countryside.  Please get in touch with the centre for more information and to check availability
