RYA VHF DSC Course Interactive

Background

 

This RYA VHF DSC course is an interactive course for the short Range Certificate (SRC) that allows the legal use of Marine VHF/DSC radios.  The course is available on PC and MAC.

On successful completion of the interactive course, you will be given an individual ‘pass’ number that you will then provide for the practical assessment that must be taken at an RYA Shorebased Centre.  It is hoped that you will be able to attend an assessment at PPSA at Neyland Yacht Haven, Brunel Quay, Neyland in Pembrokeshire, details of dates for assessments are contained in the PPSA Calendar, although if you cannot find a date to suit you, please get in touch and the assessmenet team will endevour to find a date to suit you.

Course topics include:

• the basics of radio operation
• the correct frequencies (channels) to be used
• distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
• making ship to shore telephone calls
• Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
• Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
• Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
• Search and Rescue (SART)
• The course will be taught using radio simulators and will be examined by a short written test.

Assessment

The assessment comprises of a 30 min theory paper and a 30 min practical assessment.    On succesful completion, your licence applicaiton will be sent to be processed by the RYA.  The assessment and licence applicaiton will cost a further £76 payable directly to the RYA.  Therefore, cost for the entire process will be £151.

As part of the course feeds you will receive the VHF Handbook (G31) and a VHF/DSC licence application form which you must bring with you to the Assessment, you will also require a passport sized photo of yourself.

To enable access to your online course we need to share some of your personal data with the RYA via your user profile in www.ryainteractive.org. This learning management website is hosted and maintained by a third party called Learning Pool, who will not use your personal information for any reason other than enabling your course.

Your name and email address will be entered on www.ryainteractive.org in order to create your user account. On your first access to the site, you will be asked to enter your address and date of birth. You will have access to the site for one year in order to complete your online course. During this period, your personal information will be held on the website by Learning Pool and be available to this training centre and the RYA for the purpose of managing your course.

Instructional support will be provided by this training centre for a period of 1 year from the date of your course booking.

On completion of your course, your name, email, date of birth and address will be transferred to the RYA’s central database for the purpose of recording details of the course and any certification you gain as a result of it. This information allows the RYA to record your certification, to update any records they may already hold about you or your qualifications and to verify your certificate if required. After one year from the date of your enrolment on the course, your user account will be removed from www.ryainteractive.org.

How to sign up:

1. ‘Buy’ the course through the website.

2. PPSA will create a user account for you on RYA Interactive and let you know your log in details.

3. You will log on to the Interactive Site with your username and you’ll be asked to change your password.  You can then start working on your course.

4. On completion of your interactive course, contact PPSA to arrange for your VHF/DSC Exam.
