Overview
The RYA Day Skipper Theory Course /Watch Leader course is designed to provide you with a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. The Day Skipper Theory Course is an integral part of the RYA Yachtmaster Scheme and is an essential building block of knowledge for those wishing to progress to the RYA Day Skipper practical course. This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.
The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is taught over an intensive 50 hours with two exam papers. It can be covered as a series of short sessions or as an intensive week-long course. For this course, the dates are spread over 2 weekends, the first is a 3 day part, the 2nd is 2 days. You must have signed up for the 1st weekend to enable you to attend this part of the course. Should you wish to undertake the course over a different time frame, please get in touch, although this is dependent on the number of students available.
Course topics include:
- the basics of seamanship
- the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
- chartwork
- electronic charts and chart plotters
- position fixing
- plotting a course to steer
- weather forecasting and meteorology
- tides
- collision regulations
- construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
- emergency and safety procedures including distress calls,use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts.
Course Duration
The course is intensive and lasts for approx 50 hours, including homework.
